2024 National Soil Moisture Workshop
Please join us for the 2024 National Soil Moisture Workshop, which will be held in-person (with a limited virtual option) July 15–18, 2024 at Utah State University, in Logan, Utah.
This workshop provides a unique opportunity for those involved in soil moisture research, monitoring, and applications to come together in an interactive format to exchange ideas and develop collaborations across their areas of interest and with the user community. This will be the 15th consecutive year for the workshop, which was started by the researchers who created the Marena, Oklahoma, In Situ Sensor Testbed (MOISST). It has now grown to be a premier event for sharing soil moisture research and applications.
This year’s workshop will include some new program components, and will be structured as follows:
- Monday, July 15: Field trips to tour local sensor companies and an opportunity to engage in sensor and instrumentation workshops.
- Tuesday, July 16 and Wednesday, July 17: Regular meeting sessions, with invited speakers as well as attendee oral and poster presentations.
- Thursday, July 18: Field trip to the Cache National Forest to visit SNOTEL and share in discussions of the unique challenges and opportunities with forest soil moisture monitoring.
You are welcome to join any or all of these day-long sessions.
Workshop Goals
- Provide a highly focused venue for presenting cutting-edge research and new concepts related to soil moisture monitoring.
- Highlight new applications of soil moisture data and identify application-oriented research needs.
- Stimulate progress towards realizing the vision of the National Coordinated Soil Moisture Monitoring Network and the Forest Soil Moisture Monitoring Network.

Logistics
Dates: July 15–18, 2024
Location: Utah State University, Logan, Utah
Logan, Utah is located along the foothills of the Wasatch Mountain Range, 80 miles North of Salt Lake City, Utah. There are many modes of transportation to campus from the airport. Please see some options below.
Shuttle Service:
- Salt Lake Express shuttle service is available between the SLC International Airport and Utah State University.
- View shuttle times for July 14 and 18.
Car Rental:
- View car rental agencies available at the airport.
Local Bus Routes:
- Local Cache Valley Transit District (CVTD) buses (Routes 1 and 15) run every half hour between the central terminal downtown and the USU Campus (30-minute walk).
- The CVTD app will provide real-time bus location and arrivals.
Lodging:
- A block of rooms have been reserved on campus at the University Inn.
- Additional hotels are available downtown, including Hampton Inn & Suites, Days Inn & Suites, among others.
Parking:
- Off-campus parking on 500 & 600 East is free during summer.
- University Inn guests park for free in the Big Blue Terrace.
- Visitors pay $2/hr or $10/day in any of the following locations. Visit the Utah State University parking page for more information.
